The space age and astronautics begin with the launch of Sputnik 1 by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in October 1957, and with the Explorer 1 by the United States in January 1958. In October 1958 it was created in the United States. United NASA. In the following two decades, more than 1,600 spaceships of all kinds were launched, most destined to orbit our planet. On the surface of the Moon have been two dozen men, who have later returned to Earth. In the year 2000 there were already about 9,000 objects (with diameters greater than 10 cm) rotating around the Earth, mostly rocket remains and equipment from its launch phases, and other similar materials.

Manned ships must meet complicated requirements due to the needs of the crew itself. They must provide air, water and food to the crew, navigation and control equipment, sleeping seats and compartments and transmission equipment to send and receive information. A characteristic of the manned ships is the screen or thermal shield that covers them to protect them from the heat that is produced when re-entering the atmosphere.

Spacecraft are launched from platforms where ships and propellant rockets are carefully placed and inspected before launching. Operations are supervised by engineers and technicians at a checkpoint located nearby. When everything is ready, the rocket engines start and the spacecraft rises into space.
